FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DATA TRANSFERS
Q. What package speed do I need to transfer large files?
A. Simple truth is you can transfer large files at any speed; it's more a question of how long that transfer will take. Here are a couple tables to help you out:
Transfer speed (Mbps) | Megabytes | Gigabytes |
---|---|---|
1.5 | 675 | 0.675 |
5 | 2,250 | 2.25 |
10 | 4,500 | 4.5 |
20 | 9,000 | 9 |
50 | 22,500 | 22.5 |
100 | 45,000 | 45 |
250 | 112,500 | 112.5 |
500 | 225,000 | 225 |
1,000 | 450,000 | 450 |
Transfer speed (Mbps) | Theoretical time (Seconds) |
---|---|
1.5 | 5,333 |
5 | 1,600 |
10 | 800 |
20 | 400 |
50 | 160 |
100 | 80 |
250 | 32 |
500 | 16 |
1,000 | 8 |
LATENCY
Q. What is considered acceptable ping (or latency) for online gaming?
A. If you’ve ever noticed that another player always seems to have the jump on you, that might be because they have a faster ping. Here’s a rough guideline:
- Excellent: 0-59 ms
- Bearable: 60-129 ms
- Poor: 130-199 ms
- Unacceptable: 200+ ms
Things to look for if your ping (or latency) times are higher than average. First check to see if your device is connected either wireless via (2.4/5Ghz) or connected by ethernet. Wireless network congestion from other competing neighboring signals can degrade performance immensely. This is especially so if you live in a moderate to large neighborhood with many wireless routers abroad. In this case, we would highly recommend an ethernet cable directly connecting your device to the router for best performance. Other areas to check would be internal network usage. For instance, if you have a smart tv, roku, or firestick in the background streaming from the web or you're live streaming on Twitch,TikTok,etc these devices / apps use lots of bandwidth and can be robbing your gaming pc (or console) out of the bandwidth it needs. A third consideration is maybe the group (or server) that's hosting is too far away from your network, or the hosting individual has poor service which is degrading the game session's overall performance. Distance to the hosting server or a hosting individuals upload speed or connection can greatly effect how you the player perceives latency when gaming online.
